Easter Sunday at Paul Ricard: Race 2

Perfect weather greeted the thousands of spectators who made their way to Pau Ricard on Easter Sunday for the second race of the BOSS GP season.

Ingo Gerstl continued his winning streak in his Toro Rosso STR1. Gerstl and Ulf Ehninger were the only two drivers in the F1 class, as Frenchman Didier Sirgues was unable to make the grid, in his Jaguar R2. With 50 points from the first two races, Gerstl is already a favourite for the title.

Former Formula 1 driver Antonio Pizzonia set the fastest lap time of 1:47.991 in his HS Engineering Dallara. Towards the end of the race, the OPEN driver gave his team a few anxious moments, as he allowed the gap to the  FORMULA group melt down to 0.8 seconds. Pizzonia will be racing the entire season for HS Engineering.

Pizzonia led the second group, ahead of Faggionato, Colombo and Ghiotto.

It was Simone Colombo’s day in the FORMULA class. After a tight duel with compatriot Marco Ghiotto (Scuderia Palladio) in the previous day’s race, the order this time was quickly sorted. At the start, Ghiotto tried to overtake Colombo, but was not successful. As the race progressed, Colombo’s lead grew to nearly five seconds before being reduced to 2.5 seconds, as the Italian crossed the line ahead of his fellow countryman. Third place “Checoo” Malavasi, once again, finished third, almost 25 seconds behind.

Thomas Jackermeier (Top Speed) fought his way to an excellent fourth place. For much of the race he was in a fierce duel with David Moretti, who was having an excellent race, and on his way to fourth. Unfortunately, Moretti was forced to park his car on the Mistral Straight, on the last lap.

Marc Faggionato, in his MM International GP2-Dallara, was also out of luck. The Monegasque driver, who had competed in no less than three races at the Grand Prix de France Historique the previous day, winning all of them – including the BOSS GP – had to retire early. Faggionato was thus denied the chance of another double victory after Brno 2018.

Fourth place in the FORMULA class was GP2 driver Thomas Jackermeier, in his Toro Rosso ST3.

Rookie Henry Clausnitzer and his team WF Racing celebrated another finish at their first BOSS GP race weekend. He was rewarded with another 25 points for the class win in the SUPER LIGHTS six-cylinder class.

Drivers and teams now have a four week break before the next race at Hockenheim, on May 5-7.
